Adrian Mace followed his passion for all things electronic. The self-confessed ‘IT Guy’ is majoring in Systems Administration and has brought some amazing ideas to life through group projects.
Bachelor of Information Technology
The beauty of my degree is that you are exposed to all kinds of specialisations during the first year, so those who are unsure on what career path to take can work in a variety of environments and focus on their favourite in the remaining years.
Since primary school I have loved everything electronic and I quickly became known to be “The IT Guy”. By the end of primary school I was administering and managing the schools network and computers.
When deciding what universities I should apply for, RMIT was the only one in Melbourne that offered a specialisation in Systems Administration. This instantly made RMIT my first preference and after touring the city campus, my decision was confirmed.
The highlight has been the extra group projects undertaken with friends from my program. The freedom of choice for some of our major assignments has allowed our group to bring to life some amazing ideas, including the creation of a virtualisation platform from scratch, a video that discussed freedom of speech and a fully automated quiz PDF generator with separate answer keys.
When starting this program I had very limited knowledge about Linux and other nix-based operating systems, however after learning about these systems in great detail, I feel confident taking on a Unix Administration role in the industry.
My degree could prepare anyone who is interested in the IT industry. You are exposed to all kinds of specialisations during the first year, so those who are unsure can work in a variety of environments and focus on their favourite in the remaining years.
The facilities at RMIT are excellent, the educators are friendly, approachable with a vast knowledge base related to their courses, and being a part of the school comes with some excellent benefits such as free or heavily discounted Microsoft products through Dreamspark.
