A passion for helping people led Emma Thorne to study Radiation Therapy. She's undertaken placements in Victoria and interstate, giving her the confidence to step straight into the workforce.
Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations)
My studies at RMIT have allowed me to pursue an exciting and gratifying career in Radiation Therapy. The skills that I have learnt from the large practical component of my degree have given me many professional contacts in the industry and made me confident to step straight into the workforce when I graduate.
I’ve always been interested in oncology. I wanted to be able to help people with cancer in a hands-on, practical way.
Radiation Therapy was the perfect career choice for me because it gives me daily interaction with patients and the opportunity to work in a rapidly developing field of technology.
RMIT’s Medical Radiations graduates are in high demand not only in Australia but internationally.
RMIT is the only university in Victoria that has a state-of-the-art Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT), which provides students with a 3D virtual experience of a treatment room.
The university also has a dedicated planning room where students can practice planning radiotherapy treatments using the same software that’s used out in the industry.
I’ve gained strong practical skills through regular placements in radiotherapy clinics, both in Victoria and interstate. Students are exposed to a variety of different settings, from large metropolitan centres to small rural hospitals.
In my final semester I worked closely with the university to organise an interstate placement in my hometown of Perth, Western Australia. I was the first RMIT student to undertake a radiation therapy placement in Western Australia.
Through my work placements I’ve developed industry contacts and gained the confidence that I’ll be ready to step into the workforce when I graduate.
Medical radiations is fulfilling career, allowing you to work as part of a team and with patients. It also gives you the opportunity to see the impact of rapidly advancing technology and new research.
I’m looking forward to graduating and combining travelling the world with my dream job.
