The RMIT Capitol Theatre is a cultural and educational hub, home to a unique auditorium, learning and collaboration spaces and many other facilities.
Originally designed by celebrated architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, The Capitol is considered their greatest interior design work. With its spectacular lighting design, elaborate foyers and intricate crystalline ceiling, the 1924 Chicago Gothic-style theatre is also one of Melbourne’s most beloved architectural icons. The National Trust and Victorian Heritage have registered the property based on its architectural, historical, aesthetic and technical significance.
Along with restoring The Capitol to its former glory, RMIT and Six Degrees Architects have made considerable upgrades to the building, transforming it into a contemporary destination for culture, education and innovation. The Capitol now offers Melbournians experiences across cinema, video, new digital media, VR, AR, gaming, video art and animation. There is an extended stage to host live theatre, talks, conferences and lectures, a new cinematic sound system, 4K digital projection, a coffee, candy and wine bar, and a direct link to RMIT’s Media Precinct, which allows remote broadcasting capability.
Renowned Australian architect and RMIT alumnus Robin Boyd once described the theatre as “the best cinema that was ever built or is ever likely to be built.” The Capitol has now been reinvented as a place where the creative industries can not only showcase and inspire patrons, but also innovate, educate, collaborate and connect with the future of Melbourne’s creative community.
